What a Chiller Is For

Lighting, pumps and warm rooms all put heat into an aquarium, and there is no passive way to take it back out. A chiller circulates tank water through a heat exchanger and moves that heat into the room instead. Reef systems under intense lighting, small tanks with too little volume to ride out a swing, and coldwater or temperate setups are the usual cases for one.

Sizing and Setup

• Match the unit to water volume and to the temperature drop you need — the same machine handles far less water when asked to pull further.
• Count the heat added by return pumps and lighting, not just the tank volume.
• Larger units may call for a dedicated circuit; check the electrical requirement on the listing.
• Every chiller needs its own feed pump and clear air space around the exhaust vents.
• Installation kits cover the plumbing between tank and chiller.
