Do You Need an Aquarium Chiller?

If your tank drifts above the low-to-mid 20s°C in summer, or your lighting and pumps dump more heat than the room can shed, a chiller is how you hold a stable temperature. It matters most for reef and marine systems running bright LED or metal halide, for small tanks where a few degrees swing fast, and for coldwater or seafood setups that have to stay genuinely cool year-round.

A chiller works like a refrigerator: refrigerant pulls heat from the water through a heat exchanger and vents it as warm air. Every chiller we carry uses a titanium exchanger, which resists saltwater corrosion far better than other metals.

Matching a Chiller to Your Tank

  • Small and nano tanks — compact drop-in and inline units sized for desktop and 10–20 gallon systems.
  • Standard home aquariums — fractional-horsepower models covering most reef and freshwater display tanks.
  • Large and commercial systems — higher-horsepower units for big displays, fish rooms, and coldwater or seafood applications, some requiring a 230V circuit.

The right size depends on two things: how much water you're cooling and how far below room temperature you need to hold it. A unit that easily handles a tank at a small temperature drop covers far less volume when the gap is wide, so read each product's sizing chart and factor in the heat your pumps and lights contribute.

Questions on sizing or setup? Reach our team before you buy — matching the chiller to the tank the first time saves a warranty headache later.

J&L Aquatics was formed in December 1997

Our business was started from our love of the aquarium hobby. We at J&L Aquatics felt that the Canadian aquarist should have the option to purchase top quality supplies, equipment and livestock other than the generally over priced local retail stores.
