Working out what size to buy

Capacity comes down to how many lines the pump feeds and how far down the water column the air travels. The same stone placed in a tall tank asks noticeably more of a pump than one sitting in a shallow tub. Published tank ratings give a starting point, but a pump feeding a deep sump or several outlets is doing more work than that number implies.

Feeding multiple outlets

• A multi-outlet body supplies each line straight from the pump.
• Gang valves divide one outlet, sharing the available output across the branches.
• Individual control valves balance the lines afterward.

Placement, noise and outages

Every diaphragm pump vibrates to some degree, and the surface it sits on changes how much of that carries into the room - a hard cabinet top transmits far more than a pad or folded cloth. Where possible, keep the pump above the water level; where the cabinet layout makes that impossible, fit a check valve so a stopped pump cannot start a siphon. A battery-capable pump is worth considering in areas with frequent outages, particularly for heavily stocked or quarantine systems where oxygen matters most.
