A Small Change That Alters the Whole Display

A background covers the cabling, hoses and wall behind an aquarium and gives the fish a plain surface to be seen against. Colors that disappear against a lit wall stand out against a dark panel, which is why a background often does more for how a tank looks than another piece of equipment would.

• Static-cling background panels in three heights — 12, 18 and 24 inch — applied to the outside of the glass.

Fitting Notes

• Measure the outside height of the rear glass before choosing a panel.
• Clean and dry the glass completely; trapped dust shows through permanently.
• Smooth the panel on from one edge, pushing air out ahead of it.
• Trim to width with a fresh blade against a straight edge.

Take your time over the fitting — a few unhurried minutes is the difference between a panel that disappears and one you notice daily.
