Picking a Staple

• Floating pellets and flakes — for surface and mid-water feeders.
• Sinking pellets and wafers — for catfish, bottom feeders and shy fish that stay low.
• Algae and seaweed formulas — for tangs, plecos and other grazers.
• Carnivore diets — higher-protein pellets in larger particle sizes.
• Species diets — cichlid, betta, guppy and shrimp formulas at matched sizes.
• Micro sizes — small pellets and granules for nano fish and juveniles.

Buy what you will finish. Prepared food degrades once the container is opened, so the biggest tin is only cheaper if it gets used within a few months — for a single small tank, the smallest size usually wins.
