Getting Past Ripple and Blue

Two things sit between you and the tank: the moving surface, and the blue light corals are kept under. A viewer handles the first by putting a flat lens through the surface. A filter lens handles the second by cutting the blue cast, so color reads closer to what the eye expects.

What's Here

• Coral viewers — magnifying tubes from 6 to 10 inches that break the surface for a clean top-down view.
• Clear magnifiers — glass-mounted lenses giving a magnified side-on view, in several sizes.
• Orange filter lenses — cut the blue cast for viewing and photography under actinic light.
• Phone photo lens kits — clip-on macro and wide-angle lenses with filters for tank shots.
• Camera mounts — magnet-mounted brackets for holding a compact camera against the glass.
• Viewing portals — a fixed lens for a permanent top-down view.

Top-down and side-on are genuinely different views. Corals that look unremarkable through the front pane often look like another animal entirely from above, which is why almost all coral photography is shot that way. Questions? Email info@jlaquatics.com.
