Ordering Stone by the Pound

Buying by weight rather than by the boxed set means the layout drives the order instead of the other way around. Choose the largest feature stone first, then add smaller supporting pieces in clearly different sizes — even spacing and matched sizes are what make an aquascape look artificial.

Textures to Choose From

• Pitted, hollowed stone — deep holes and crevices that hold moss and epiphyte plants well.
• Angular gray stone — sharp layered edges suited to minimalist stone-only layouts.
• Stacking plates — flat rock for building terraces and planted shelves.
• Rounded weathered stone — a softer profile for river-style and shrimp tanks.
• Porous lava rock — dark, lightweight and easy to attach plants to.
• Sinking driftwood — two length ranges for midground and centerpiece placement.

Preparing Hardscape

Rinse and scrub each piece before placing it so dust does not cloud the tank, and bed stone into the substrate rather than resting it on bare glass so digging fish cannot topple it. Some rock types can raise water hardness and pH, and untreated wood often releases tannins that tint the water for a few weeks, so test the tank after adding a large amount if your fish or shrimp are sensitive.
