Ordering the right spare

A top-off pump and its controller are designed as a set, and a pump that fits another controller mechanically may still be driven at the wrong voltage. Take the part number from the component being replaced, or from the paperwork the system shipped with, and order against that rather than the model name of the aquarium it serves. Where a controller has been superseded, the manufacturer generally states which units the current version supports.

While the system is apart

Swapping a pump is a good opportunity to clear salt buildup from the outlet fitting and confirm the siphon break is still above the water line. If the replacement has a higher delivery head than the original, the tank refills faster than it used to, so watch a few cycles before leaving it alone.
