Choosing a capacity

Work backward from evaporation. Measure what the tank loses in a day, multiply by the number of days you want between refills, and take the next size up. Placement counts too: a low, wide reservoir slides under a stand more readily than a tall one, and a pump with sufficient head can draw from a container in a completely different room.

Getting the most from one

Fill top-off reservoirs with reverse osmosis or deionized water only, since anything else concentrates into the display over time. Leaving the lid in place slows evaporation out of the reservoir itself. Check compatibility before storing supplements in acrylic, because organic carbon solutions and alcohols can craze the material and product pages call out the combinations to avoid.
