Where the pH goes

Skimmers move a great deal of air through the water each day. In a sealed, occupied room the carbon dioxide level in that air climbs, and dissolved CO2 drives pH down, often at its worst overnight and through the colder months when windows stay shut. Treating the intake air is one response to it; plumbing the air line to an outside wall is another.

Practical notes

The housing goes inline on the skimmer air line and the media inside is a consumable. Service intervals vary with air volume and with how much CO2 the room holds, so pairing a scrubber with pH monitoring is the usual way of telling when a recharge is due. Match housing size to the skimmer, since more air moved means the media is spent sooner.
