Low-Suction Filtration for Delicate Tanks

Foam gives bacteria somewhere to live and traps particles on the way through, and because an air lift moves the water there is barely any draw at the intake. That combination is why sponge filters are standard in fry tanks, shrimp tanks and hospital tanks, where a conventional intake strong enough to filter is also strong enough to injure the stock.

Running and Maintaining Them

• An air pump and airline are usually needed and usually sold separately; the product page states what a given filter requires.
• Clean the foam in water siphoned out during a change. Chlorinated tap water destroys the colony.
• Squeeze it out when flow slows, and no more often than that. Foam that looks clean is doing less work.
• Running a spare filter in an established tank gives you seeded media ready to drop into the next setup.
