Under the Tank or On the Rim

Where a filter sits decides most of what it can do. A canister lives in the cabinet and pushes water through a sealed stack of media baskets, giving you more media volume and nothing cluttering the display. A hang-on filter clips over the rim with a smaller basket, and takes seconds to open when media needs swapping.

Size to the stocking, not the tank. A busy or heavily fed aquarium does better on a filter rated above its nominal volume, and there is no penalty for being over-filtered.
