Fit Comes First

These inserts are cut for particular filters, and a near-fit is worse than it looks: water takes the gap instead of the media, so the filter runs on while doing much less work. Check the model number on the housing before you order.

Media Types

• Foam and bio-foam — mechanical trapping plus surface area for bacteria.
• Carbon inserts and carb cartridges — for color, odor and leftover medication.
• Ceramic bio media — durable biological media that holds the nitrifying colony.
• Ammonia-removing inserts — useful in new tanks and quarantine setups.
• All-in-one cartridges — floss and carbon combined, for filters that take a single slot.
• Intake strainer sponges — pre-filter sleeves that stop debris and small livestock reaching the impeller.

Don't change everything at once. Swapping every insert in one go takes the bacteria out with the dirt, so alternate mechanical and chemical changes across separate weeks, and rinse biological media in aquarium water rather than under the tap.
