Waste out, not stored

A skimmer takes dissolved organic waste out of saltwater before bacteria convert it into nitrate and phosphate. Fine bubbles carry those compounds to the surface as foam, which gathers in the cup and is poured away. Media holds waste until it is changed; a skimmer physically removes it from the system.

Sizing and settling in

• Measure the sump and the stand opening first. A capacity rating means nothing if the body will not fit.
• Ratings assume moderate stocking, so heavy feeding or large fish are reasons to go a size up.
• A new skimmer foams unevenly for a week or two before output steadies.
• Film inside the neck changes how foam climbs, so wipe it out as part of routine maintenance.
