Match the Base to the Build

Substrate and rock do more than fill the bottom of the tank — they set water chemistry and give bacteria a home. The right choice depends entirely on what you're building: a reef, a planted tank, and a fish-only setup each want something different underfoot.

Choosing Your Foundation

  • Reef sand — aragonite live and dry sand that helps hold saltwater pH and alkalinity.
  • Planted soils — active aqua soils that supply nutrients and gently lower pH for plants and shrimp.
  • Base and reef rock — clean, pest-free dry rock for building reef structures.
  • Freshwater gravel and stone — inert gravels and natural stone for freshwater aquascapes.
  • Hardscape wood — driftwood and aquascaping mortar to shape a natural layout.

Rinse inert gravel thoroughly before it goes in, and fully cycle dry rock and sand before adding livestock. Dry-fit your rockwork first — arranging it before filling saves a lot of frustration. Questions on picking a substrate? Email info@jlaquatics.com.

J&L Aquatics was formed in December 1997

Our business was started from our love of the aquarium hobby. We at J&L Aquatics felt that the Canadian aquarist should have the option to purchase top quality supplies, equipment and livestock other than the generally over priced local retail stores.
