Collection: Base Aquarium Rock

Every reef structure starts with dry base rock. Choose loose rock by weight, pick out individual shapes such as arches, caves and branches, or start from a boxed kit assembled for a particular tank size. Modular rods and stone bonding compounds let you lock the finished structure together so it will not shift once sand and water go in.

Rock by Weight, Shapes and Kits

Dry rock is the structural layer of a reef aquarium: it carries the weight of the aquascape, sets the paths water takes through the tank, and gives corals somewhere to be mounted later. Because it arrives dry and clean, nothing unwanted comes into the tank with it.

Formats Available

  • Loose rock by weight — small single pieces up to bulk quantities for a full layout.
  • Shaped rock — arches, caves, donuts, trees and branching pieces for structure and cover.
  • Boxed kits — pre-selected rock packed for a stated tank size range, from nano upward.
  • Rod-and-base systems — drilled bases and support rods for tall or open structures.
  • Bonding kits — stone mortar for permanently joining pieces.

Building the Aquascape

Assemble the whole structure outside the tank first and check it stands on its own before anything is bonded. Leave open sand across the front for water movement and for reaching the glass later, and keep the base pieces narrow enough that detritus does not collect in dead corners. Once the layout is bonded and cured, it can go into the tank as a single stable unit.

J&L Aquatics was formed in December 1997

Our business was started from our love of the aquarium hobby. We at J&L Aquatics felt that the Canadian aquarist should have the option to purchase top quality supplies, equipment and livestock other than the generally over priced local retail stores.
