Collection: Hygger Powerheads & Gyres

Hygger's in-tank flow equipment falls into three groups. Gyre pumps in 5000, 7000 and 9000 push a broad horizontal band of water across the aquarium rather than a narrow stream. The 360 Mini powerheads, rated 530 and 1056 GPH, suit compact freshwater and marine setups, and the Mini Powerhead at 1320 GPH sits between them. Double powerheads carry two heads on a single unit, at 2 x 1050 and 2 x 2100 GPH. Ratings are the manufacturer's own figures, so factor in rock and glass when deciding where a pump goes.

Two different kinds of flow

Gyre pumps run a long cross-flow rotor that sends a wide band of water down the tank, which helps in displays where rock creates dead spots. A standard powerhead does the opposite job - a tighter stream from one nozzle, simple to point wherever it is needed. Both are stocked here: 5000, 7000 and 9000 gyres for whole-tank circulation, and the 360 Mini and Mini powerheads for directed flow in smaller aquariums.

The range at a glance

  • Gyre pumps offered as 5000, 7000 and 9000.
  • 360 Mini powerheads at 530 and 1056 GPH.
  • Mini Powerhead at 1320 GPH.
  • Double powerheads carrying two heads, at 2 x 1050 and 2 x 2100 GPH.

Getting placement right

Published flow ratings are measured in open water, so the figure on the box is not what arrives at the opposite end of a rockscaped tank. A gyre works best mounted along the back glass with its output running the length of the aquarium, and a powerhead should sit well above the substrate so it does not lift sand. For fish that prefer calmer water, two smaller heads spread across the tank usually beat a single high-output pump.

J&L Aquatics was formed in December 1997

Our business was started from our love of the aquarium hobby. We at J&L Aquatics felt that the Canadian aquarist should have the option to purchase top quality supplies, equipment and livestock other than the generally over priced local retail stores.
