The Job You Can't Put Off

Algae on the front pane is the one piece of maintenance everybody notices. The tools divide into two families: magnets that clean without a wet sleeve, and scrapers on handles that reach where a magnet will not go.

• Floating cleaning magnets — mini through large, sized by glass thickness rather than tank volume.
• Handheld scrapers — blades on 12 to 28 inch handles for corners, seams and the foot of the pane.
• Replacement blades — stainless and plastic, singly and in multipacks.
• Replacement pads and scrapers — the wearing parts of a magnet, far cheaper than replacing the unit.

Two rules prevent most of the damage. Match the magnet to your glass thickness — too weak and it drops off constantly, too strong and it is a fight to move. And keep stainless blades away from acrylic, which they will scratch permanently in one pass. Watch for grit as well: a grain of sand caught under the pad turns a cleaning magnet into sandpaper.
