Filtration You Take Back Out

A filter sock traps detritus before it breaks down, and the entire point is removing it. Left in place it stops filtering and starts feeding the tank instead, which is why the practical answer is to own several and rotate.

Choosing a Sock

• Felt socks — 100 and 200 micron, the finer end, for polishing water.
• Mesh socks — 225 and 250 micron, coarser, faster-draining and simpler to rinse.
• Sizes — 4 inch and 7 inch collars in standard lengths, plus nano and rectangle formats.
• Media cups — replace the sock with a basket holding media of your choice.
• Sock holders and rings — support the sock where the overflow enters the sump.
• Filter pad material — cut-to-fit sheet for sumps and hang-on filters.

Start with the collar diameter your holder takes, then choose a micron rating. Finer polishes better and clogs sooner; on a heavily fed system a 200 or 225 micron sock frequently does more real work over a week than a 100 that blinds off in two days. Questions?
